Today, I’m going to walk you through exactly how to start affiliate marketing as a complete beginner. By the end of this guide, you’ll be ready to take action and start today.
Here’s what we’ll cover:
- How to actually join affiliate programs
- How to get your links from those affiliate programs
- What kind of content to create for affiliate marketing that actually works and will make you money
- Where to post that content
- How to get traffic to your affiliate marketing content
- How to get paid by these companies
Okay so without further ado, let’s get straight into this.
What Is Affiliate Marketing?
Affiliate marketing is basically a referral system. You partner with companies by joining their affiliate programs (which are usually free). They give you a unique link (affiliate link).
Here’s how it actually works:
- You partner with companies by joining their affiliate program or their referral program — for free
- They give you your unique referral link, which is called your affiliate link
- You take your link and share it with other people
- When they click on your link and make a purchase, the company pays you a commission
That is all affiliate marketing really is.
And when you understand it at that fundamental core level, the rest of the strategies I’m going to show you will make so much more sense.
Why Affiliate Marketing Is Such a Good Business Model
Now something else that’s extremely important to understand before we get into the actual strategy is — why is affiliate marketing such a good business model? Why would you choose this one compared to all of the other online business models out there?
Well the short answer is that so many big companies rely on their affiliate programs or their referral programs to drive new customers to their business, especially as advertising costs are going up year over year, making it more expensive for them to get customers through their traditional routes.
This is something that so many people that are consumers like you and me don’t realize about these businesses.
However, these massive companies in their sales and marketing departments have an entire division dedicated to their affiliate program.
So that is why affiliate marketing has been a proven business model and will continue to be a proven business model for years to come.
Examples of Affiliate Programs
You might be surprised how many big brands offer affiliate programs.
Starting with the first one, which is actually the largest affiliate program out there — Amazon’s affiliate program.
So many people don’t know this, but Amazon actually has an affiliate program and they pay up to 10% commission on anything someone buys on Amazon after clicking your affiliate link.
Now here are a couple of others that you may be surprised by:
- Best Buy — if you live in the United States this is an in-person store where you buy electronics, and they have an affiliate program
- Target — most people don’t know this but Target has an affiliate program as well, so you can join it and refer people to anything sold at Target
- Shopify — this is a subscription tool to make a website and sell things online, and they rely heavily on their affiliate program for new customers
- Skillshare — a marketplace that sells courses online, and they get new customers through their affiliate program
- Fiverr — a platform where you can buy services online, and they have an affiliate program
- Bluehost — the largest website hosting service out there, they have an affiliate program and this is a massive part of their business
These are just a couple of affiliate programs that I wanted to show you, but there are thousands of affiliate programs out there in all different categories or niches that you can join for free.

How to Find and Join Affiliate Programs
Step 1: Pick your niche
The first thing I would recommend is to come over to Google and type in the niche or the industry that you are thinking about creating content in.
Now I get this question all the time — what if my niche is too competitive? I see people already creating affiliate content in it, can I still go into it?
The short answer is, don’t worry about competition. No matter how competitive the niche already is, you can still succeed as long as you have these three things:
- The niche has affiliate programs for products that are regularly purchased online — and this is a big one. There are some products out there that people will only feel comfortable purchasing in store, they have to try it on and things like that, so make sure people are okay regularly purchasing those products online
- You are passionate or knowledgeable about the topic
- The niche has affiliate programs — no matter how competitive it already is, if you have those things you can still make money in it
So the first step for you here is to pick a niche that you want to start with.
You can go into so many different niches down the road, but for now you just want to come up with what are your interests, what are your passions, what are things that can be purchased online — that’s a great place to start.
Step 2: Search for affiliate programs in your niche
I’m going to use the example of the camping niche for this guide.
Go to Google and type in “list of camping affiliate programs” — or whatever your niche is. You’re going to get results that give you lists of different affiliate programs in that niche.
For camping, this website lists camping companies like Yeti, GoPro, Dick’s Sporting Goods, REI, etc., that offer affiliate commissions in camping products.

What you’ve just done is found out what companies you can possibly be creating content about.
Now you can continue to dig into your niche and find even more results, but once you’ve found at least one company that has an affiliate program in the niche you want to go into — and ideally you already own the products that company sells — you’re going to be able to create your affiliate content without having to buy anything.
Step 3: Go directly to the company’s website and apply
All you need to do is go directly to the company’s website, sign up, and join their affiliate program.
Joining an affiliate program is always 100% free. The only stipulation I’ve ever seen is that some companies require you to own the product before you can join their affiliate program.
It’s just the company’s way of making sure that whoever is creating content for them actually knows the product properly.
But with that being said, you can join as many of these affiliate programs as you want and create content about all of the different products — you don’t have to be exclusive to just one company.
What the application looks like
When you go to sign up, a typical affiliate program application is really just basic information:
- Your name and email address
- A username and password
- Some basic company information — where you’ll be promoting their products
Now if you are a new affiliate marketer, you might be a little hesitant at the company information section. Just know that you do not need to have a company registered to do affiliate marketing.
What they are asking for is they just want to keep track of who they are paying and where you are promoting, so they’re looking for your website where you’re going to be promoting their products.
You don’t need to have a website. You can simply use a free YouTube channel URL or your social media where you’re going to promote their products.
Most people’s biggest hesitation is that they think they need to have a full website with blog posts or a big following to get accepted into affiliate programs.
But what you are going to find out as you get into this is you can be 100% brand new, just started today, and you can still get accepted to these affiliate programs.
The company will also give you their terms — basically just telling you how much they pay in commissions and their policies, etc.

Some of these companies accept you instantly. Others review your application and get back to you in a couple of days on whether they approve you or not.
What to Put in the “Website” Field on Your Application
Before I forget — this is super important and ties everything together.
A YouTube channel is entirely free to make. All you have to do is sign into YouTube or create an account and you can create a channel 100% for free.
Here’s the key: you can take the link to your YouTube channel and go back to that affiliate program application and put it in the website address box. This way:
- You don’t have to pay to create a website
- You don’t need anything posted yet
- You don’t need any subscribers
That YouTube channel link will act as your website for these affiliate marketing applications.
How to Get Your Affiliate Links
After you’re approved, you’ll get access to a dashboard.
Inside, they allow you to:
- Track how many people have clicked on your links
- Track how many people have purchased through your links
- Keep track of how much commission they owe you
The important thing when you’re just getting started is actually creating your affiliate links. What you’re looking for in your dashboard is a section that says “Create and Share Link” or “Create Your Link” or “Get Your Affiliate Link.”
All you have to do is click create — and that is your unique affiliate link to that company.
You copy this link and then paste it anywhere that you are creating content and want to send people to the company you’re partnered with. That is seriously how simple this is.
What Content to Create, and Where to Post It
Let’s get into the fun part — what kind of content should you be creating for affiliate marketing and where should you be posting it.
There is no single right answer here. There are actually multiple platforms working really well for affiliate marketing right now, and the best one for you is going to come down to what you’re most comfortable with.
So let me walk you through some of the popular options.
1. Social Media — TikTok, Instagram Reels, and Facebook
Let’s start with social media because this is where a lot of people are making serious money with affiliate marketing right now. And I’m not talking about the old school way of slowly building up a following over years before you can start making commissions — the game has completely changed.
TikTok and Instagram Reels have completely leveled the playing field for beginners. The way these platforms work is that your content gets pushed out to people who don’t already follow you.
So unlike the old Instagram model where you’d post something and only your existing followers would see it, a single video on TikTok or Instagram Reels can go viral overnight and put you in front of hundreds of thousands of people — even if you had zero followers when you posted it.
This is a massive deal for affiliate marketing because it means you don’t have to spend months or years building an audience before you can start making money.
You can post your very first video today, it can go viral tomorrow, and suddenly you have thousands of followers and people clicking your affiliate links. This is genuinely happening for people every single day right now.
Here’s how people are making it work. You create short videos around products in your niche — unboxings, reviews, “best products for X” style videos, or just showing a product in use. You don’t even have to be overly polished or professional about it. In fact, on TikTok and Instagram Reels, raw and authentic content tends to perform better than anything that looks too produced.
You put your affiliate link in your bio, mention it in the video, and every time someone taps that link and makes a purchase you earn your commission.
Facebook is also worth mentioning here. Facebook Groups in particular are incredibly powerful for affiliate marketing. There are groups for literally every niche you can think of — camping, fitness, personal finance, home improvement — and these groups are full of highly engaged people who are genuinely interested in the topic.
When you become an active, helpful member of these communities and naturally recommend products you love, people click on those links. Facebook also has its own short video format now that works similarly to TikTok and Reels.
Limitation with social media
Now the limitation with social media that is worth knowing about is that your content does have a shelf life.
A video might go viral and bring in a huge wave of traffic, but that spike eventually dies down.
You’re always going to need to keep posting to keep the commissions coming in consistently.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing — if you enjoy making content — but it’s something to be aware of going in.
Another problem with platforms like TikTok and Instagram is that they don’t allow clickable links in captions.
Someone would have to physically click on your profile, go back to your profile page, and click the one link you’re allowed to put in your Instagram profile.
This is not conducive to affiliate marketing because you want to be able to put a clickable affiliate link directly on the content that you are posting
2. Google and YouTube — The Long Game
Now if you’re not comfortable being on camera or you don’t want to be constantly posting short videos to keep up with social media algorithms, this approach is going to be a much better fit for you.
Here’s something that most people don’t know — Google and YouTube are owned by the same company.
So when you post a video on YouTube, it doesn’t just show up on YouTube. It can actually show up directly in Google search results as well.
This means you’re getting exposure on both platforms at the same time with a single piece of content.
On social media, you’re putting content in front of people who are scrolling and might happen to be interested in what you’re talking about.
On Google, you’re showing up in front of people who are actively searching for exactly what you’re talking about. Someone typing “best camping kettle” into Google isn’t casually browsing — they are ready to buy. That is a completely different kind of buyer and that is who you want clicking your affiliate links.
The other massive advantage of Google and YouTube is that this content keeps working for you long after you post it.
A YouTube video or a blog article that ranks on Google can bring in traffic and commissions for months and even years — not just for a day or two after you post it like on social media.
If you’re not comfortable on camera, that is completely fine. A lot of YouTube content in the affiliate marketing space is actually faceless. You can just film the product with your hands, show the features you’re talking about, and narrate over it. You never have to show your face at all.
As long as you’re recording real original footage and talking through it yourself, that is exactly the kind of content YouTube and Google want to see right now — because it’s real, human-created content that AI can’t replicate.
And if video isn’t your thing at all, you can also go down the route of creating a niche blog or website with written articles targeting these Google searches.
Although it has become more competitive recently with AI-generated content flooding Google, but it is still a very viable strategy if you are willing to create genuinely helpful, in-depth content that stands out.

So which one should you choose?
Here’s the honest answer — there is no wrong choice. It really comes down to what you’re going to actually stick with.
- If you enjoy short punchy videos and want the chance to grow fast, start with TikTok or Instagram Reels
- If you want to build something more community-driven, look into Facebook Groups
- If you want long-term passive traffic and you’re okay with being on camera or showing products on camera, go with YouTube
- If you prefer writing over video entirely, start a niche blog targeting Google searches
What I would say is pick one and go all in on it rather than trying to do everything at once. Get comfortable with one platform, start making commissions, and then you can always expand to others later.
Popular platforms’ monthly active user numbers:
| Platform | Monthly Users |
|---|---|
| 3+ billion | |
| 3+ billion | |
| YouTube | 2.7 billion |
| 3 billion | |
| 400+ billion searches |
How You Get Paid
Okay so the very last thing to wrap all of this up — how do you get paid by these companies once people click on your affiliate link and go make a purchase?
This is honestly the simple part. You can live anywhere in the world to join these programs. All you have to do is put in your PayPal, Payoneer, or even a bank account for direct deposits.
These companies will automatically pay you out every single month. It’s part of their accounting, it’s part of their sales and marketing department — they will automatically pay you out on the same day every single month. You don’t have to lift a finger to do this.
Final Thoughts
Affiliate marketing is one of the simplest ways to start making money online.
You don’t need:
- A big audience
- A website
- Or upfront investment
Just pick a niche you’re passionate about, find and join free affiliate programs, create real video content targeting what people are already searching for on Google, drop your affiliate links, and collect your commissions automatically every single month.
Start simple—and improve as you go.
