The biggest mistake most of us make when we’re bored?
We assume we need to spend money to have fun.
But that couldn’t be further from the truth.
In reality, there are so many hobbies you can enjoy for free—or at a very low cost—that are just as fun, creative, fulfilling, and you can even do at home. Whether you’re trying to avoid unnecessary spending, fill your free time, or just looking for a new hobby to pick up, this list has you covered.
Let’s dive into some of the best free hobbies you can do espacially if you’re a woman.
DIY & Creative Projects
1. Baking with what you already have
I know this one sounds kind of crazy, but most of the time if you look in your pantry or your fridge, you already have the ingredients to create maybe like a basic cookie or a cake or some sort of dessert.
Banana bread, for example, is literally just flour, baking soda, egg, banana, and vanilla extract — very simple ingredients.
You could also get very very creative with this and maybe come up with some sort of recipe yourself with what you have in your pantry.
Most of the time you don’t need to go out and spend $20 to $30 on baking ingredients that you most likely already have at home.
2. Making a recipe book
These don’t have to be crazy recipes. You can go on to Pinterest, search for some of your favorite recipes that you love or want to try, and create a little book out of those.
You could draw the pictures, print out pictures if you have access to a printer at home, bedazzle it, watercolor it, use different colored paper — you could get so creative with this. And honestly, this is a great hobby for taking up a solid chunk of your day too.
3. Junk journaling
Don’t get junk journaling confused with scrapbooking.
Scrapbooking, you need a lot of materials — the paper cutters, the different colors of paper, the glitter paper, the stickers, literally all the things.
Junk journaling is very different. Say like you go on a trip with your friends — you don’t even need to print pictures out.
All you have to do is while on the trip, you gather things like receipts, straw paper, stickers off of fruits, literally the most random stuff, and you stick it in a journal. It’s junk journaling because it was all free. Everything on that page was free.
4. Origami
I bet 99.9% of y’all already have paper lying around your house. And that is literally all you need — paper and a little tutorial.
It’s a good way to pass time and you can make little things for the people you love.
5. Building houses in The Sims
Okay, this one’s a little niche and I know it won’t be accessible to everybody.
If you have access to it, the base game alone offers endless creative possibilities. Designing houses is surprisingly absorbing and will eat up hours.

Nature & Outdoors
I think it’s very important to have a hobby that gets you outside in nature, not cooped up in your room or your house or your apartment. So I wanted to come up with some that would be really great for just getting outside for a little bit.
6. Themed nature walks
This is not the same as just going on a walk.
Before you go on a walk, you’re going to give yourself a theme. Like, for example, look for things that are yellow. So while you’re on your walk, you’re going to be on the lookout for yellow things — maybe a flower or a flag or a car or a sign, literally anything that’s yellow. You can take pictures of them and put a little collage together at the end, which I think would be such a cute idea.
Your brain is more focused on the color you’re looking for and less in your head.
7. Stargazing
Why don’t people do this more often.
Just go outside, set out a blanket in your front yard or your backyard or whatever is accessible to you, and look at the stars.
Maybe see if you can find the Big Dipper or the Little Dipper. I feel like just looking up at the sky and looking at all of the stars is so beautiful. I probably sound a little cliche and kind of nerdy, but it’s calming, nostalgic, and completely free.
8. Leaf pressing
Go out into nature yourself and find flowers or leaves, press them in a heavy book, and use them later in a journal, frame, or resin crafts like coasters. Finding them yourself adds a whole other meaning to it.
9. Propagating plants
It’s a great way to start learning about plants and maybe even gardening a little bit, and it’s honestly very fulfilling watching it grow roots and stay alive because of you.
And then later on you can move it to soil if you’d like or just keep it in water.
Also — this might be controversial — but at Home Depot and Lowe’s in the plant section there are usually little succulents on the floor that have fallen off and are going to get thrown away or stepped on. Some people might call that stealing. I personally would not call that stealing because it’s going to die anyway.

Wellness & Self-Care
10. Yoga
If you’re looking for an active hobby where you want to become flexible and build some muscle, yoga is the perfect way to go.
I know yoga isn’t like the most crazy workout, but I promise you — you will gain muscle, you will be sore.
And depending on the routine you do, it can also help relax your body and calm you down before bed or if you know you have a stressful day coming up. It’s just a great hobby that I think most people should get into.
If you’re working on building muscle and leaning out, these high-protein foods are exactly what you need on your plate.
11. Having a spa day
Face mask, snacks, your favorite show, no agenda. You don’t need to buy anything — DIY face masks work great with kitchen ingredients like honey, oats, or yogurt.
This spa day doesn’t need to be anything crazy, just as long as you are having fun, relaxing, and spending some time with yourself.
12. Candlelight journaling
Light a couple of candles, sit somewhere quiet, and write. It honestly feels like you’re in a movie and you’re writing a love letter to somebody, except you’re just journaling about your day or journaling to prompts.
It creates a surprisingly calming mood, relaxes the mind and the body.
13. Creating a cozy corner
I know this one sounds kind of low-key boring but hear me out.
You could string up fairy lights, or even make a fort by draping a blanket over the corner of your bed. If your bed isn’t in a corner, just use an empty corner with as many pillows as possible. Get all your snacks and favorite drinks, turn off the lights, and have your fairy lights going.

Creative Arts & Crafts
14. Coloring
You don’t even need to buy a coloring book or markers or crayons. You can go onto your phone, iPad, whatever is accessible to you and get a free coloring app.
But if you already do have coloring books and crayons or markers at home, that’s obviously a great free hobby too.
15. Creating mood boards
Go on to Pinterest, save those photos to your phone or your computer, then go on to Canva or any other designing app you like and put it all together into a digital mood board — for a vibe, a future room, a personal aesthetic, whatever you’re into.
You don’t need to spend money in order to have a mood board.
16. Drawing
YouTube has tutorials for every skill level. Disney Plus also has character drawing guides if you have access. Or just draw freely — no tutorial required.
Or if you’re super creative and just love drawing without a tutorial, it’s obviously a great hobby.
17. Experimenting with makeup
Again, you don’t need to go out and buy a bunch of makeup — this one is obviously for if you already have some.
Find a look on Pinterest you’ve never tried or just want to try in general. It’s a great way to be creative and stretch that part of your brain. It doesn’t have to look good. That’s half the fun.

Learning & Mental Stimulation
18. Learning a language
There are so many apps on the App Store / Play Store you can use to learn a language for free.
Honestly, learning a new language is great if you just want to sit down for 30 minutes and take in some information.
Or if you have a trip coming up to another country, even better. And I’m sure there are videos on YouTube where you could learn a language too.
19. Reading
You may be thinking — that’s not free, I have to buy books. Wrong.
There are these buildings called libraries that I think most of our generation has forgotten about, where you can go and borrow a book completely free, take it home, read it, bring it back, and get another one.
Or you can listen to an audiobook on Spotify, or read ebooks which are also free. So if you don’t have the money to buy a new book, there are options out there for you.
20. Sudoku
Having Sudoku on your phone is also great because if you’re in the car, on a train, on a plane, at the dentist office — literally anywhere you’re just sitting and need to waste some time — I promise the time will go by super fast.
There are plenty of apps like Sudoku in the app store to play for completely free.
21. Puzzles and riddles
Jigsaw puzzles, riddles, actual puzzles — you can do all of this on your computer or your phone. There are so many different riddle apps and puzzle apps out there.
You don’t need to go out and buy a puzzle in order to have this hobby.

Hobbies like reading, puzzles, or learning a language improve focus, mental clarity, productivity, and attention span.
Entertainment & Relaxation
22. Listening to a podcast
Most are free on YouTube or Spotify. There’s genuinely something for every interest — motivational, conversational, investigative, comedic.
23. A solo themed movie night
Pick a theme for your movie night — like early 2000s movies, a specific director, a franchise — and go on to Netflix, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime, or even pop in a DVD if you still have those.
Gather all your favorite snacks, have your cozy corner ready, your favorite drinks, have a face mask on, and just watch a bunch of themed movies.
24. Starting a YouTube channel
Starting a YouTube channel is completely free. You get to just be yourself, put yourself out there, show who you really are, and be super creative.
If you’re scared to start because you’re afraid to fail or not grow super fast — failure is a complete lie. Perfection is a complete lie.
Nobody’s perfect, and honestly if you’re not failing every once in a while, you’re not trying hard enough. Thomas Edison failed over 700 times trying to make the light bulb. You will attract the people that are meant for you, and it’s a great time. It really is.
25. Photography
You don’t need an expensive camera in order to take pictures. Take your phone and go out and take pictures — of your friends, your family, your pets, aesthetic photos, literally anything.
And get good at it, or be bad at it. So what? Hobbies are not meant for you to be super good at. Hobbies are meant to be fun and to fill your time.
So just go out, take photos of whatever, come back, maybe edit them, create a collage, post them wherever you like — and just be super fun and creative with it.

Final Thoughts
You don’t need to spend money to enjoy life or beat boredom.
Sometimes, the most meaningful hobbies are the simplest ones — the ones that let you create, explore, relax, and just be present.
So next time you feel bored, instead of reaching for your wallet, try reaching for one of these ideas instead.
