50+ Hobbies Worth Your Time Instead of Doom Scrolling

what to do instead of doom scrolling

We’ve all caught ourselves mindlessly scrolling, taking in a lot of negative energy, seeing what everybody else is doing with their lives.

At some point, it hits you: there has to be something better to do.

Doom scrolling fills your mind with noise, comparison, and negativity. There comes a time for everyone when you have to entertain yourself, and not everyone has that ability. But spending time alone doesn’t have to mean consuming endless content.

It should mean learning more about yourself, figuring out what interests you, and finding out what things you actually find fun.

Here’s the truth:
You don’t need to be perfect to start something new.

A hobby isn’t about being good at it. It’s about enjoying it. It’s something you do for yourself, something that brings excitement, peace, or even just a break from your thoughts.

So without further ado, here are hobbies broken down into three categories: creative, active, and mental.

🏃 Active Hobbies

1. Running

Really good for your heart and your mental health. Even if you’ve never been a running person, it’s one of those things that surprises you once you get into a rhythm with it.

2. Hiking, Pilates, and Yoga

All such good ways to get movement in. Pilates especially, whether at home or in a class, is something you really feel the next day. It makes you sore, gives you a good stretch, and it’s such a satisfying form of exercise.

3. Swimming, Ice Skating, and Dancing

All great options too. If there’s a dance class near you, whether it’s hip-hop, jazz, salsa, or ballet, it’s worth looking into.

4. Rock Climbing

An active hobby that takes so much more strength than people realise. It’s one of those activities that surprises you every time and makes for such a great recurring hobby rather than just a one-time thing.

5. Paddleboarding

So much fun and something you can do alone or with friends. Just head to a lake, blow up your board, and spend a couple of hours out on the water. It’s the kind of activity that makes you wonder why you don’t do it more often.

6. Lifting, Barre Classes, Kayaking, Bowling, Walks, Gardening, Archery, Hot Yoga, and Acrobatics

All worth looking into depending on what you’re drawn to. Barre classes in particular seem to get a lot of people really sore in the best way because it’s like ballet and Pilates combined. Bowling is another one that’s so much more fun than people give it credit for, especially the atmosphere of a bowling alley.

7. Skiing and Snowboarding

If you’re somewhere with snow, obvious ones to add to the list.

🧠 Mental Hobbies

8. Learning a New Language

So fun, especially if you’re planning to visit another country one day and want to be able to actually speak with people there. The key is consistency because it’s easy to fall off, but when you’re in it, it’s so rewarding.

9. Reading and Book Clubs

Reading is a classic mental hobby for good reason and if you want to make it more social, joining or starting a book club is such a good idea. It’s also just a really good social opportunity if you’re looking for community around something you already enjoy.

10. Learning to Write in a Different Alphabet

Something that sounds really difficult but also just really fun to know. There’s something really cool about people who have that kind of random knowledge. It’s just interesting to have in the back of your mind.

11. Sudoku and Crossword Puzzles

So underrated as hobbies. Put a show on in the background and you’ll fly through an afternoon without even noticing. It sounds kind of boring until you actually do it and then you get it.

12. Learning About Other Cultures and Countries

Such a fun rabbit hole to go down. Learning about how other countries do things or how other cultures operate is genuinely fascinating, and it’s that kind of random knowledge that makes you really interesting to talk to.

13. Learning About Beauty Topics

Going on YouTube and actually educating yourself on how makeup products work or how skincare ingredients function is so much more interesting than it sounds. If you’ve ever been to esthetician school or even just looked into it, you’ll know how fascinating the science behind it all actually is.

14. Blogging

One of those hobbies that can genuinely become anything. You can blog about recipes, tips, experiences, literally any topic you’re passionate about.

15. Puzzles and Legos

Some of the best ways to just zone out and be present. The big Lego sets are pricey but so worth it when you have them. Regular puzzles are cheaper and just as satisfying, especially with a movie on in the background.

16. Building Your Vocabulary

Such a simple thing you can do a little bit every day and it adds up over time. It’s one of those quiet hobbies that makes a real difference in how you communicate and express yourself.

17. Listening to Podcasts

Honestly one of my favourite things to do on long drives. It’s so different from music. You get to hear someone talk about their life or give advice on a topic you care about and it’s just a really good way to learn something while you’re already doing something else.

18. Studying the Legal System

One of those topics you don’t expect to find interesting until you do. Watching something like Suits and learning certain terms used in court or how the legal system actually works can spark a genuine curiosity that’s really fun to follow.

19. Learning Sign Language

Such a good skill to have. Even just two years of it gives you the basics and the alphabet, and it’s one of those things that genuinely surprises people when you know it. Fun, useful, and just really cool to have.

🎨 Creative Hobbies

20. Keychains

A fun one. There were those chapstick keychains that went viral for a while, or you can do cozy creature keychains, or just turn beads into keychains. There are so many different options.

21. Customising Phone Cases

Honestly so cool. You can use putty, resin, gems, whatever you want. You can make enough to switch them out for yourself or gift them to people for birthdays and Christmas. I just love the idea of DIY phone cases, I think they’re so adorable.

22. Crochet and Knitting

Imagine being able to crochet your own stuffed animals, which is literally the coolest thing. You can make hats, sweaters, scarves, and so many other things. Knitting is apparently a little more difficult but just as worth it.

23. Air Dry Clay

So much potential. People were making little miniature things with it for a while and it went viral, but you can also make actual jewellery boxes, chess boards, Tic Tac Toe boards. There are so many possibilities with air dry clay and it’s honestly one of the more fun crafts to get into.

24. Making Bracelets

You see these cute beaded bracelets everywhere, and honestly you can make them super aesthetic, like ones you’d actually want to wear all the time, not just the colourful kids’ ones.

25. Learning to Sew

Something so worth looking into. Imagine making your own dresses, skirts, tote bags, duffel bags, makeup bags. Getting into sewing is something a lot of us should do because it’s just so artsy and entertaining and a genuinely good way to spend your time.

26. Scrap Fabric Shirts

Really cute and honestly if you got into it heavily, you could probably sell them at some point. You can customise them to be more like you or make them for someone’s birthday. I just love how personal they can be.

27. Wall Tapestries

A hobby that takes patience but is so worth it. They are very tedious and they take a while, but if you love time-consuming crafts, this one is definitely for you. You can literally make whatever you want on it, whatever your little heart desires.

28. String Bracelets

Kind of the starter version of wall tapestries and honestly a great place to begin. You might have grown up making these, especially at summer camp. So many different patterns, you can put words in them or little pictures, and wearing like ten of them at the same time is peak nostalgia.

29. Beaded Necklaces

Something fun to get into and really rewarding. If you make them to fit your style, you can wear them all the time and even make some to match different outfits.

30. Bedazzling Things

One to get into if you love all things cute and girly. You can bedazzle t-shirts, hats, phone cases, canvases, makeup bags, skincare products, literally anything.

31. Candle Making

Sounds so fun because honestly a lot of candles have really questionable things in them that you probably shouldn’t be inhaling. If you make them yourself you know exactly what’s going into your space. You can mix scents, pick cute colours, decorate them however you want.

32. Cup Decorating

Something people sell on Etsy all the time. There are cups for every category of person, and again it’s something you could turn into a little side hustle if you get really good at it.

If you want to make an extra couple of thousand dollars, here are some side hustles you can try.

33. Embroidering Clothing

A hobby that’s more accessible than people think. You don’t need an expensive embroidery machine either. Just get some embroidery thread, one of those little circle hoops, draw out what you want, and put your thread through it. It would probably cost you less than $20 to start.

34. Adding Ribbons to Clothing

Little bows on sweatshirts, at the bottoms of jeans, on purses and tote bags. You can even add them to boots, and it’s just so fun and so cute.

35. Upcycling Clothes

Goes hand in hand with sewing. If you have something in your closet you don’t wear anymore but don’t want to get rid of, or something sentimental that no longer fits, you can turn it into something else entirely instead of donating it. There are so many ways to transform one item of clothing into another.

36. Baking and Cooking

There’s something so satisfying about being that person who hosts and brings out the cute cookies and baked goods. If you have dietary restrictions it also just makes so much more sense to learn to make things yourself so you know exactly what’s in them.

37. Candle Painting

One of those hobbies that sounds almost too fun to be real. You melt coloured candles and use that to paint designs onto an unmelted candle. It creates the most beautiful results and it’s such a unique and creative way to spend your time.

38. Making Your Own Bookmarks

Such a fun little project. You can use string, resin, or just paper and glue. Using the string method would probably make it more of an ongoing hobby rather than a one-time craft.

39. Painting

Something so many people avoid because they think they’re not good enough, but there’s no standard for what art is. You could go into any art museum and see paint literally splattered on a canvas selling for half a million dollars. You can’t be bad at it. Just play some soft music in the background and go to town.

40. Vision Boards and Pinterest Boards

So much fun and such a good way to get inspired. Using Pinterest as a vision board rather than printing and cutting everything out is a great option if you don’t have the space for a physical board. It’s honestly just a really fun way to spend some time and get motivated.

You can even make money with Pinterest. Here’s how.

41. Making Your Own Bath Bombs

Great if you’re into knowing what goes onto your body. You control the ingredients, the scents, the colours, the style. I genuinely recommend it.

42. Scrapbooking

Such a good hobby to get into. You can keep a personal one where you document fun weekends, activities, birthdays, and events, or make one for someone special in your life. It’s so much more satisfying than just scrolling through photos on your phone, and trust me it is a very time-consuming activity, which makes it the perfect hobby.

43. Writing and Journaling

Really good for your mental health. Just getting everything out of your head and onto paper without having to talk to someone about it. Even if you find it hard to stay consistent, writing in general is just such a good way to pass time and process whatever is going on in your life.

44. Pottery

One of those hobbies that feels really special once you get into it. There are home kits you can get if you can’t find a class near you. You can be super creative, make whatever you want, and eventually sell your work if you get really good.

45. Bullet Journaling

Kind of like scrapbooking mixed with making your own planner. It’s one of those things that looks so aesthetically pleasing and satisfying to watch online, and it genuinely is just as enjoyable to do yourself.

46. Graphic Design

Something a lot of people are really into and it’s something you can genuinely turn into a job or just do on the side for fun.

47. Photography

A hobby that also gets you out of the house, which is a bonus. Not photographing couples or weddings, just capturing what you find aesthetic or pleasing to look at. If you’re tired of laying in bed, go outside, go somewhere, and take pictures of things.

48. Furniture Restoration

All over Instagram and TikTok and honestly the results are incredible. You can buy a dresser off Facebook Marketplace for $10 and sell it for $500. It’s hard work but people genuinely make a lot of money doing this.

49. Interior Design

Doesn’t require a degree to be a hobby. You can create mood boards of rooms you love, plan what you want your future home to look like, or figure out how to rearrange your current space. I find it so fun.

50. Starting a YouTube Channel

If you’ve always wanted to do it, just do it. You don’t need a plan, you don’t need to know how you’ll reach 100,000 subscribers, just start posting and do it for fun.

51. Doing Your Own Nails

Honestly, one of the best money-saving hobbies you can pick up. It’s so fun and you can get so creative with it once you get comfortable. So many people who were once into art have found their way into nail art for exactly that reason.

52. Junk Journaling

Similar to scrapbooking except it’s less about documenting events and more about putting whatever you have onto a page. Ticket stubs, magazine cutouts, coloured paper, literally whatever. It’s such a good way to express yourself without needing a specific occasion.

The Bottomline

There are endless hobbies out there, you just haven’t found yours yet.

Try different things. Be bad at them. Laugh at yourself. Keep going.

Because once you find what you love, it becomes a lot harder to waste your time scrolling through someone else’s life… when you’re finally building your own.
